Since you have learned that eating high fat content foods would cause not
only weight gain but also cardiovascular disease and cancer, you may have
come to regard fats as the "bad guys", but there are "good
fats" (unsaturated) which are called essential fatty acids EFAs. They are essential because our body does not produce them. You have to supply them from foods or supplements and they are also essential

There are two types of polyunsaturated essential fatty acids: omega-3 (linolenic acid), and omega-6 (linoleic acid)
A rich source of omega-3 is contained in fish oil and flax seed oil (see this page on kyolic EPA, harmony essential oil formula and EH-101).
In the body, omega-3 makes two other essential fatty acids EFAs which are
called eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). DHA
is crucial to the health of your brain and the retina of your eye, especially
in unborn babies and in the first year of life. The studies show DHA helps
your mental/neurological performance such as memory retention, mood change,
visual problems, etc.,. The studies also support the beneficial effects
of omega-3 for heart problems: blood clotting, high blood pressure, tryglyceride
levels, etc.,. Another interesting study done recently is a double-blind
test upon crohn's disease patients. 39 crohn's disease patients were given
omega 3 daily for one year. At the end of the study, 59% (23 patients)
experienced total remission of their problems, compared with only 10 patients

June 13, 1996.)
Omega-6 is found in flax seed oil, black current seed oil, nuts, seeds
and most unheated vegetable oils. According to the studies, the GLA (gamma
linolenic acid), an omega-6 fatty acid, has produced remarkable improvements in rheumatoid arthritis patients. The studies showed significant alleviation of inflammation.*
Omega-9 (oleic acid) is a monounsaturated fat. Found in blackcurrant, flax, pumpkin, and safflower seed oils.
Omega-3 and 6 are polyunsaturated fats.
