Numerous clinical studies have shown that saw palmetto (serenoa repens) is remarkably effective and safe in treating the enlarged prostate - benign prostatic hyperplasia ( BPH ). The enlarged prostate and subsequent obstruction of the bladder neck and urethra cause: increased urinary frequency, nocturia (excess urination at night) and dysuria (painful urination). If left untreated, enlarged prostate BPH will eventually obstruct the bladder outlet, resulting in the blood's retention of waste products normally excreted in the urine. Traditionally, surgery is done as a treatment for enlarged prostate, but it often makes matters worse. Over 20 double-blind studies have demonstrated that approximately 80-90% of enlarged prostate BPH cases were successfully treated with saw palmetto.* In these studies, the patients took 160 mg of saw palmetto twice a day for approximately 30 to 90 days.

Lycopene is a nutrient which is recently getting attention from researchers as another powerful antioxidant. It is a carotenoid, the pigment that gives ripe tomatoes their red coloring. So far, the research on carotene antioxidants has been carried out exclusively with beta-carotene, however, new studies are coming out showing that lycopene is more effective in prevention of enlarged prostate and may have a role in treatment.* Every man over 40 years old should take lycopene for maintaining a healthy prostate.*

The isolated beta-glucan component, known as D fraction, functions as a potent immune modulator by boosting the body's own immune responses including natural killer cells, cytotoxic T-cells, macrophage, super oxide anion cells and interleukin.* Maitake D fraction extract has demonstrated more effect than Lentinan and PSK (Kawaratake extract) in its immune enhancing activity.*
